Vinyl siding for Suffolk County homes

Vinyl comes in lap, Dutch lap, board and batten and molded shake profiles, in many colors and thicknesses. It never needs paint, and a damaged panel can usually be swapped without disturbing the rest of the wall.

What separates one vinyl product from another

Thickness, the depth of the nail hem, and how the panel locks to the one below all affect how it handles wind and how flat it lies on the wall. Manufacturers publish wind-load ratings for their panels; on an exposed waterfront or hilltop house it is reasonable to ask which rating the proposed product carries.

Darker colors absorb more heat. Many lines now offer deep shades made to resist fading and warping; ask whether the color you want is one of them and what the manufacturer's written warranty says about fading.

Installation details that matter

Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, so it is hung loose: nails driven not quite tight, centered in the slots, with room at the ends of each panel. Panels nailed tight are the ones that buckle on a hot afternoon. Good wrap and flashing behind the vinyl matter, because vinyl sheds most water but is not a sealed skin.
