Engineered wood siding on Long Island

Engineered wood siding is made of wood strands bonded with resin and treated against moisture and insects. It looks like painted wood, weighs less than fiber cement and comes in long boards. LP SmartSide is one well-known product of this type.

What to know about it

Engineered wood arrives primed or pre-finished and is painted much like wood clapboard. The long boards mean fewer butt joints on a wide wall. Like any wood product, it depends on sealed cut edges, proper clearances and flashing; the manufacturer's installation instructions spell those out and are worth reading with the contractor.

It suits houses where you want the look of painted wood on a new addition or a full re-side, and where the weight of fiber cement is a concern.
