Siding replacement in Suffolk County, Long Island

When patching no longer makes sense, the old siding comes off, the wall underneath gets checked, and a new skin goes on. One call connects you with an independent contractor that does this work across Huntington, Babylon, Islip, Smithtown and Brookhaven.

What a re-siding job usually covers

Most replacements start with a tear-off: the old siding comes down to the sheathing so the contractor can see what has been hiding behind it. Soft or stained sheathing gets cut out and replaced. A water-resistive barrier (house wrap) goes on, windows and doors are flashed, and then the new siding and trim are installed from the bottom course up.

Some jobs go over existing siding instead. That can be quicker, but it hides the wall, adds thickness at windows and doors, and is not allowed by every product's instructions. Ask the contractor which approach they propose and why.

Things worth settling before work starts

Which material and which profile (lap, Dutch lap, shingle, board and batten), and the color. Whether the price covers sheathing repairs, and how those will be priced if they turn up. Whether trim, soffit and fascia are included. Who pulls any permit the town requires, and how debris leaves the site.

New York's home improvement law expects all of this in writing: a description of the work and materials, approximate start and finish dates, and your three-business-day right to cancel. The license and contract guide lists what to look for.

Questions to settle with the contractor

  • The contractor's Suffolk County home improvement license number, checked on the county's search
  • A written contract that names the product, the profile and the color
  • How rotted sheathing or framing will be handled and priced if it is found
  • Whether house wrap, flashing, trim and cleanup are in the price
  • Whether your town or village wants a permit for the job
