Siding repair in western Suffolk County

A few cracked panels, a section the wind pulled loose, a soft spot under a window: plenty of siding problems end with a repair, not a new house wrap. Repair calls are welcome here, and so is the question of whether repair is enough.

What a repair usually involves

Vinyl panels lock into each other, so a contractor can unzip a damaged course and slide a new piece in. Fiber cement and wood are cut out and replaced board by board. Cedar shingles come out one at a time and new ones are slipped in and nailed under the course above.

The harder part is matching. Vinyl colors fade and products are discontinued; old cedar has weathered to gray; fiber cement may have been painted more than once. Ask the contractor how close a match they expect and whether they would move matching siding from a hidden wall to the front.

When the problem is behind the siding

Rot usually starts where water gets in and can't get out: under windows, at the bottom course, where a roof meets a wall, beside a deck ledger. Soft sheathing or framing has to be cut out and replaced before new siding goes back on, so a small repair can grow once the wall is open. A good contractor tells you that up front and puts the way they'll price it in writing.

Questions to settle with the contractor

  • Photos of the damage, inside and out, before anyone opens the wall
  • Whether spare siding from the original job is in the garage or basement
  • How the contractor will price rot repairs if they find more than expected
  • Whether the repair is matched to the existing siding or replaces a whole wall
