Soffit, fascia and trim, as part of a siding job

Trim, soffit and fascia frame the siding, and rotten trim is often where water gets in. This page covers them as part of a siding job; calls here are for siding work that includes them.

What each piece does

Fascia is the board along the roof edge where gutters hang. Soffit closes the underside of the overhang and, when vented, lets air into the attic. Corner boards, window and door casings, frieze boards and skirt boards finish the edges of the siding.

During a re-side, rotten wood trim can be replaced with new wood, PVC, fiber cement trim, or wrapped in aluminum coil. Ask whether vented soffit is included and how the gutters come off and go back on.

Questions to settle with the contractor

  • Which trim pieces are in the price and in what material
  • Vented or solid soffit, and attic ventilation
  • Who removes and rehangs the gutters
  • How rotted rafter tails or fascia boards are handled
