Fiber cement siding in Suffolk County

Fiber cement is a mix of cement, sand and wood fiber pressed into planks, panels and shingle strips. It holds paint well, keeps a straight shadow line and is sold by its makers as non-combustible. James Hardie's HardiePlank is one widely sold example; other makers produce similar boards.

How it differs from vinyl

Fiber cement is heavy and rigid, so it is nailed tight to the wall and the joints are planned rather than overlapped loosely. It comes primed or factory-painted. Primed boards need paint after installation; factory finishes need touch-up at cut ends.

Cutting it makes fine silica dust, so contractors use saws with dust collection or shears and work outside. If the job is on an occupied house, ask where cutting will happen.

Where it suits Long Island houses

It reads like painted wood clapboard or shingles, which makes it a common choice where a house should keep a traditional look without the upkeep of wood. Clearance from roofs, decks and the ground matters, because the boards should not sit in standing water or snow; the manufacturer's instructions give the distances.
